2. Read the next three chapters of Persepolis: "The Water Cell"; "Persepolis"; "The Letter."
3. Then, pick out a page from one of the first five chapters and do the following:
- Write down the chapter and page (so we can easily find it).
- Write down all of the inferences you are getting from said panel about either Iranian culture or about the characters in the panel.
- Also in your notes: write down characterizations you notice, plot structure you notice, and details that you find relevant from the speech bubbles.
- In your notes, create a two-column chart: Iranian Beliefs | Marjane/Family Beliefs
- start doing a side by side comparison
- Main Objective: Create three questions about the panels on your chosen page.
Developing critical thinking skills through inference questions: Go through your notes and look at your own inferences. Reflect on where those inferences come from.
Help the rest of the class see those inferences by creating three discussion questions about the plot, characterization, setting, details, or whatever else you want us to pay attention to on the page (and the panels on those pages) you have chosen.
Examples:On page 7, why does Satrapi portray the school by drawing an image of a brick wall?On page 8, who is the bearded man and how would you characterize him?
